A racing-game player approaching a hairpin is not waiting to read a desktop banner. A sports-game player tracking the puck should not have to look through an ad to find the score. A player in a social world may willingly walk through a branded portal—but only when the destination is clear and the visit feels optional.
That is the central creative decision in in-game advertising: do not begin with “Where can the logo go?” Begin with “What role can this brand plausibly play while the player is pursuing a goal?”
The best placements usually do three things at once. They occupy a surface where commercial messaging already makes sense, leave the player’s task intact, and ask for no more attention than the moment can give. The examples below show how that logic changes across racing, sports, and social games—and why a logo visible in a game is not always an ad impression.
First, identify what kind of brand presence you are buying
“In-game advertising” is often used as a catch-all, but buyers need a more precise label. The commercial mechanism determines who controls the creative, how quickly it can change, and what can honestly be measured.

The distinction is not academic. The IAB’s public explanation of intrinsic measurement separates dynamic ads, video ads, static ads, and hardcoded ad objects, while noting that its delivery guidance does not define interaction, engagement, or business outcomes. Its creative examples library also places intrinsic ads beside overlays, audio, rewarded, and playable formats. “Seen while gaming” and “embedded in the game world” are not the same thing. A second caution follows: a recognizable brand in a screenshot does not reveal the commercial arrangement. It may be paid media, a fixed sponsorship, licensed scenery, a platform house ad, or ordinary game art. Classify the mechanism before using the image as an advertising example.
Example 1: Racing—QuikTrip in Dakar Desert Rally
The IAB’s examples page identifies a QuikTrip placement in Dakar Desert Rally as a six-second looped intrinsic video running in a console and PC game. That verifies the advertiser, title, medium, and loop length. It does not, on the public page, establish the exact track position, the full playback sequence, or a causal sales result. That limitation is useful because it forces the right production question: where can six seconds of motion belong in a racing world without becoming a driving hazard?
A strong racing placement behaves like motorsport media:
- an outer-straight board that remains in the forward field of view;
- a pit, paddock, gantry, or venue screen that players already read as commercial space;
- a roadside structure seen on approach rather than at the steering decision point.
A weak placement occupies the apex marker, resembles a route arrow, flashes near a braking cue, or puts a detailed offer where speed makes it unreadable. The creative should survive a glance: one brand, one visual cue, and as little copy as the gameplay capture allows.
Anzu’s broader QuikTrip case says the campaign used display and video placements across expected locations such as roadsides, building sides, and sports venues in multiple games. That source is useful as provider-issued evidence that the placement program existed, but its reported campaign results should not be treated as independent proof that any one Dakar execution caused an outcome. Original before/after teaching example for a fictional sneaker brand:
Desktop-style version: “THE FUTURE OF FOOTWEAR IS HERE. SHOP THE RELAY V9 NOW.”
Trackside version: “RELAY V9 / NEW DROP”
The shorter line is not automatically better advertising. It is better matched to an encounter in which the player is moving quickly and will not stop to parse a value proposition.
Example 2: Sports—rink-board inventory in Slapshot: Rebound
Sports games have an advantage: real sports already contain sponsor territory. Perimeter boards, stadium ribbons, concourse signs, broadcast frames, and selected scoreboard surfaces are familiar places for commercial messages. The game does not need to invent a billboard-shaped excuse.
In a case study published by Anzu, Slapshot: Rebound developer Oddshot Games described adding display placements around the rink and stadium, followed later by video placements. The stated design intent was to reflect real-world sponsorship while fitting ads into the environment. Again, this is provider/developer evidence of implementation, not independent evidence of campaign effectiveness. (Slapshot: Rebound case study)
The placement works conceptually because the board is adjacent to play, not a game-state control. It can recur across camera angles without replacing the puck, player indicator, goal frame, score, clock, or officiating signal.
That boundary matters. A sports placement becomes intrusive when it:
- competes with the score bug or time remaining;
- uses movement that resembles an alert or replay cue;
- reduces visibility of the ball or puck;
- changes a gameplay object into a branded object players must identify under pressure;
- creates a perceived competitive advantage for interacting with the sponsor.
The safest creative test is not a static mockup. Capture actual play from the broadcast, close, replay, and celebration cameras. Reduce the capture to the size at which a buyer will review it. If the brand survives without pulling attention from the play, the surface is doing its job.
Example 3: Cross-game media—one album campaign, different world logic
A 2022 campaign for EMPIRE and artist Babyface Ray ran environmental placements across titles including Trackmania, Axis Football, Slapshot: Rebound, Left to Survive, and Ultimate Car Driving Simulator. The public announcement verifies that the same music release appeared across racing, sports, and action contexts. (EMPIRE campaign announcement)
This is a valuable example because it separates asset reuse from placement reuse. A square album image may be the same source asset, but its job changes by world:
- beside a track, it behaves like outdoor media seen at speed;
- around a football field or hockey rink, it behaves like event sponsorship;
- on an urban building face, it behaves like a poster or mural;
- on a menu or stream overlay, it is no longer intrinsic environmental media.
A buyer can use one campaign system without forcing one composition everywhere. Keep the identity, release title, and campaign code consistent, but create crops and motion behavior for the actual surface. The verification task should also remain surface-specific: readable on a pause-frame is not the same as readable during play.
Example 4: EA SPORTS—dynamic boards, custom partnerships, and licensed art
Sports titles also show why screenshots are easy to misclassify.
In June 2026, EA announced an advertising offering that includes dynamically served placements in selected 3D sports simulations, naming areas such as digital boards, scoreboards, and broadcast-style overlays. These are media units: a campaign can be served into defined inventory and measured under the program’s delivery rules. (EA Advertising announcement)
EA’s advertising showcase separately describes State Farm custom kits in EA SPORTS FC 25. A custom kit is a partnership integration, not simply a rotating board impression. The brand participates in the content players wear or encounter as part of a designed activation. The same page shows other bespoke examples, including Coach items in The Sims and Vans footwear in skate. (EA Advertising examples)
Now compare both with EA’s official FC 27 authenticity page, which emphasizes licensed competitions, official branding, authentic kits and crests, and 140 authentic stadiums. That page supports the conclusion that much of the visible branding is part of licensed representation. It does not tell a viewer that every logo in every scene was purchased as a separate ad unit. Three images can therefore look similar while representing three different deals:
- a board filled dynamically from an ad server;
- a sponsor-specific kit or challenge built for a campaign;
- a licensed mark reproduced as part of the sport’s authentic world.
Before approving a case-study caption, ask who controls the asset, whether it can rotate, what contract created it, and what event generates the metric. Those four questions prevent most category errors.
Example 5: Roblox—choose between a sign, a screen, and a doorway
Roblox’s current creator documentation makes the role of the surface unusually explicit. It describes three immersive ad forms:
- Image ads: non-clickable static images placed on an eligible 3D surface;
- Video ads: video on an eligible surface, with click-to-play or muted autoplay behavior depending on the setup;
- Portal ads: a disclosed doorway that teleports a player to an advertiser’s experience.
The same documentation currently specifies eligible image and video billboard surfaces from 8 × 4.5 to 32 × 18 studs and provides publisher reporting for video views, impressions, teleports, and Robux in its dashboard. These are current platform details and should be refreshed before implementation, not copied permanently into a generic production bible. (Roblox Creator Hub: Immersive Ads)
Each form creates a different player contract.
An image ad asks only to be noticed. It belongs on a wall, stage fascia, transit-like panel, or plaza edge that players can see without changing course. A video surface asks for more attention and therefore benefits from a natural dwell zone: a lobby, event area, queue, or social gathering point. A portal asks for action and a change of place. Its creative must explain where the player is going and must not disguise the destination as ordinary level progression.
Roblox’s Advertising Standards, last updated June 5, 2026, require clear disclosure for ad integrations, audience gating where applicable, and non-misleading portal destinations. The standards also distinguish opt-in rewarded video from forced progression gates. Those rules are platform-specific, but the design principle travels: never borrow the visual language of “continue,” “claim,” or “next level” for an optional brand destination. For a social world, the most damaging placement is often not an ugly sign. It is a brand surface placed in the spawn point, chat area, navigation bottleneck, or other space players need in order to orient themselves.
Example 6: Spotify Island—when the brand is the host
Spotify Island on Roblox is not best understood as a billboard campaign. Spotify introduced it as a social and interactive world where players could meet, complete quests, make music, collect a “Like” icon, move through themed islands, and access virtual merchandise. The brand is the venue operator and programming layer. (Spotify Island announcement)
That changes both the creative burden and the measurement model. A trackside board can be recognizable in a second. A branded destination must give people a reason to enter, something worthwhile to do, and a reason to return after the novelty wears off. It needs content operations, moderation, navigation, and event planning—not merely an exported ad asset.
It also should not be compared with intrinsic inventory by CPM alone. The units are buying different things. One buys an opportunity to see a message during an existing activity; the other tries to become an activity.
Placement map: protect the player’s task first
The following diagram is an original teaching schematic, not a reconstruction of any cited campaign. It turns the six examples into three reusable spatial rules.
The map is deliberately simple:
- Racing: place the brand on the approach or environmental perimeter, not on the apex, braking cue, or navigation arrow.
- Sports: use perimeter and venue media, not the score, clock, ball or puck visibility, player markers, or officiating language.
- Social: use optional dwell areas and clearly disclosed portals, not spawn, chat, navigation, or a fake “continue” control.
A placement can be contextually believable and still fail if the camera never frames it, if it is illegible at gameplay speed, or if the ad system serves a conflicting category. Spatial fit is the first gate, not the last.

A filled placement-fit scorecard
The scorecard below is an original decision tool, not an industry benchmark. Score each criterion from 0 to 2 for a fictional sneaker launch called Relay V9.

Here is what the columns mean:
- World logic: Would this kind of commercial object plausibly exist here?
- Player-task safety: Can the player complete the immediate task without reading or interacting with it?
- Encounter legibility: Can the intended message survive the actual camera, motion, distance, and dwell time?
- Brand action logic: Is the requested action appropriate for the moment—a glance, an opt-in interaction, a portal visit, or a longer activity?
- Measurement fit: Does the buying and reporting system measure the event the team is claiming?
The fourth idea scores poorly even though the branded object might be visually prominent. It converts a game-state object into a commercial object and can make the sponsor feel mandatory. High attention is not automatically good placement.
Use the score before creative production. Any zero in player-task safety should stop the concept. A low legibility score should trigger a surface or camera change before it triggers more copy.
Design the encounter, not a recycled banner
A useful creative brief starts with the player moment.
Racing brief
Player state: moving quickly, scanning the route, making steering and braking decisions.
Surface job: recognition, not explanation.
Build: a dominant mark, one product or campaign cue, restrained motion, and no visual resemblance to route guidance.
QA: review in live capture at multiple speeds and camera distances; inspect the approach, not only the closest frame.
Sports brief
Player state: following a ball, puck, opponent, score, and time.
Surface job: repeated sponsor presence around the contest.
Build: board-safe crops, sufficient separation from venue textures, motion that cannot be confused with alerts, and versions for the camera angles that actually occur.
QA: test broadcast, close, replay, celebration, and accessibility views; check sponsor-category conflicts and official competition rules.
Social-world brief
Player state: exploring, talking, waiting, creating, or choosing the next activity.
Surface job: either ambient recognition, voluntary viewing, or a clearly explained destination.
Build: distinguish the three jobs. A wall sign needs instant recognition. A video screen needs a dwell reason. A portal needs destination copy, disclosure, and a useful landing experience.
QA: test spawn behavior, navigation, crowding, chat visibility, ineligible-user fallback, ad-off states, and return from the destination.
The fictional Relay copy should therefore change by context:

The campaign remains recognizable, but the amount of explanation grows with the player’s available attention and the size of the requested action.
Measure the role you actually bought
A delivery report can tell you that an eligible ad was served, entered a measurable view, or generated a portal teleport. It cannot, by itself, prove that the player understood the creative, liked the integration, remembered the brand, or bought the product.
For dynamic environmental media, build the report in layers:
- Delivery: served impressions, eligible inventory, invalid-traffic controls, reach, and frequency.
- Opportunity to see: viewability under the contracted definition, plus camera and surface QA.
- Attention or memory research: only when a separate method actually measures it.
- Business outcome: brand lift, search or site behavior, store or market analysis, or experimental design with an appropriate comparison.
For a custom sponsorship, the behavioral layer may be challenge starts, completions, item equips, or return visits. For a portal, separate the surface impression from the teleport and the destination session. For a branded world, distinguish a brief curiosity visit from a qualified session and repeat participation.
Licensed art belongs in a different row. Unless a commercial activation attaches a defined media or participation event, it is part of the content and rights package—not a stream of ad impressions to be priced after the fact.
This is also why provider case studies need careful language. They can verify that a format was deployed and report the provider’s own study results. They do not make every future placement effective, and they do not replace the buyer’s measurement design.
The approval checklist
Before an in-game advertising example becomes a media plan, verify these ten items:
- Name the mechanism: dynamic media, hardcoded sponsor object, custom integration, licensed art, branded destination, or non-intrinsic unit.
- Write the player task: what the player is trying to notice, decide, or do in that exact moment.
- Mark protected zones: navigation, scoring, game-state objects, chat, spawn orientation, accessibility cues, and required progression.
- State the surface job: recognition, repeated sponsorship, opt-in viewing, portal travel, or destination activity.
- Design for the encounter: gameplay speed, camera, distance, dwell time, crop, lighting, and motion.
- Confirm rights and conflicts: league, publisher, talent, music, product category, regional, age, and existing sponsor restrictions.
- Define the metric event: what precisely creates an impression, view, interaction, teleport, completion, or qualified visit.
- Plan the comparison: decide whether the goal needs only delivery proof or a lift, holdout, matched-market, or other outcome method.
- Test non-ideal states: ineligible users, ads disabled, failed fill, low-end devices, localization, crowding, and return paths.
- Capture honest evidence: label provider claims, separate mockups from live placements, and never infer effectiveness from a screenshot.
The durable principle is simple: the brand should fit into the world without taking the player’s job away from them. Racing rewards glanceable perimeter media. Sports rewards sponsor territory that leaves competition information untouched. Social worlds can support signs, screens, portals, and complete destinations—but each asks for a different level of consent and a different proof of value.
Start with the player’s task, classify the commercial mechanism, and choose the smallest believable brand role that can accomplish the campaign’s job. That is how an in-game ad becomes part of the world rather than an object pasted over it.
