A Snapchat AR ad can look impressive in its first frame and still fail as an experience. The reveal is only the invitation. Once the Lens opens, the user needs to understand three things quickly: what can I do, what changed because I did it, and where does this go next?

The strongest examples do not treat AR as a decorative overlay. They turn the camera into a short decision journey. A shopper tries a frame, changes the style, then exits to the exact product. A furniture shopper sees an item in their room, explores other options, then continues toward purchase. A game gives one obvious gesture, immediate feedback, and a finish that reinforces the product or campaign idea. A shareable Lens makes capture and sending the natural conclusion rather than bolting a “Share” prompt onto an unrelated effect.

That is the central lesson from the examples below: design the state after the surprise before you polish the surprise itself.

Snap’s current implementation documentation places AR Lenses in the pre-capture camera carousel, while AR Filters appear after capture. That makes a Lens an active camera experience, not just a piece of media someone watches. Evidence note: The brand campaign Lenses discussed here were not available as browser-runnable experiences during this review. The flow descriptions use only mechanics stated in official Snap case studies, current Snap documentation, and the Ulta agency case study. Static images and written descriptions do not establish hidden states, timing, audio, or every control, so those details are not invented below.

The five jobs of a post-open AR flow

A useful Lens can be mapped as five connected states. Not every Lens needs a complex sequence, but every Lens needs a legible next step.

5. Exit “What now?” Make capture, share, product detail, purchase, install, or another clear next step feel earned. The CTA arrives without a connection to what the user just did.

The opening visual still matters, but it should point toward action. A pair of glasses appearing on a face suggests comparison. A sofa appearing on a floor suggests placement. Falling lemons suggest swiping or slicing. A flag and celebratory message suggest making a Snap worth sending. The object, motion, and copy should all teach the same first move.

1. Sunglass Hut: try-on becomes useful when it ends on the exact SKU

Snap’s Sunglass Hut case study documents a complete commerce path: Snapchatters could try on multiple products in a single Lens, tap a favorite, and open a product-specific landing page. Snap reported more than 14 million product try-ons and 6.7 million unique Snapchatters trying items during the 2022 campaign period. Those are platform-reported campaign figures, not proof that try-on alone caused every downstream result. The useful creative lesson is the path itself. The sequence solves three different shopper questions:

  1. Does this category suit me? Try-on places eyewear on the face.
  2. Which version suits me? Multiple products make comparison part of the Lens rather than requiring a return to a catalog page.
  3. Can I act on this exact choice? The exit preserves the selected SKU instead of dropping the shopper on a generic homepage.

That third step is easy to underestimate. A generic “Shop now” link can throw away the information created by the interaction. If the Lens helped the user prefer Frame B, the landing experience should continue with Frame B selected, available, and priced consistently.

Snap’s current Shopping Lens template also matters here. It connects the AR experience to a product catalog, changes products through Lens Product Cards, and supports a separate link for each product. The documentation says catalog products can appear in random order, so a creative concept should not depend on one specific SKU always appearing first. See the Shopping Lens template and workflow.

2. Ulta Beauty: selection is the experience, not a menu placed over it

Rise’s Ulta Beauty case study says the team used Lens Web Builder for multiple mascara SKUs, connected Shopping Lenses to Ulta’s product catalog, and designed a path from product exploration to purchase. It also describes Pixel Purchase goal-based bidding and support from video Snap Ads and Collection Ads. The useful operating model is repeatable SKU-level try-on rather than a one-off novelty Lens. A weak version of this idea would open with a dramatic mascara effect and immediately show a purchase button. A stronger version turns selection into the core loop:

  • Apply one product state immediately so the user sees a result without setup.
  • Make the next shade or formula one gesture away.
  • Change both the visual treatment and the product card together.
  • Keep the selected SKU visible long enough to name it.
  • Preserve that selection when the user exits toward product detail.

The difference is not more animation. It is a tighter connection between choice, visible consequence, and product identity.

Snap’s launch description for catalog-powered Shopping Lenses explains why this pattern can scale: product names, prices, and individual links can come from the catalog, while the Lens Product Cards let users move among products. It also says catalog updates can refresh information such as price or stock status. That reduces the risk of a visually convincing try-on pointing to stale commerce information. 3. Skeidar: product discovery starts when the room becomes part of the ad

Skeidar’s example changes the user’s role. Instead of looking at furniture photography, the user sees outdoor furniture in their own space. Snap’s case description says the catalog-powered Lens let Snapchatters experience different types of garden furniture in AR and purchase from the experience. The post-open job is therefore not “show a 3D chair.” It is to help the user answer a spatial question:

  • Where will the object appear?
  • Is its size understandable?
  • Can I reposition or reorient it?
  • Can I switch to another item without losing the room context?
  • Which product am I looking at now?
  • Can I open details for that exact item?

The public source does not expose Skeidar’s placement controls, so a responsible teardown cannot claim that users pinched to scale, dragged to move, or tapped to rotate. Those are plausible AR controls, not observed facts. What can be concluded is that the room itself carried product meaning. For furniture, that may be more valuable than adding another decorative effect around the object.

4. Wolt: a service becomes legible through a role, a choice, and a score

The Wolt Lens did not reproduce an app screen. It turned the user into a delivery rider on a scooter. The case study says players collected points depending on the food item they added to their order. That gives the Lens a clear sequence: accept the role, collect an item, receive feedback, and keep building the order. See the Wolt Snapchat AR case study.

The mechanic is useful because it compresses a service proposition rather than merely wrapping a logo around a game. Food items represent selection. The scooter represents delivery. Accumulating points gives each choice an immediate consequence. A user can understand the category before reading a feature list.

The measurement claim needs a careful boundary. Wolt compared its business-as-usual Snap Ads with a test group that combined AR Lenses and Snap Ads. Snap reports lower cost per SKAN app install and first-time user for the combined test group, but that design does not isolate the Lens as the sole cause. The creative takeaway is still valid: when a game mechanic maps to the service, the Lens can teach while it entertains.

5. Deep Eddy and Malibu: a branded game needs a proposition, not just a score

Deep Eddy’s 2026 case study describes a Lens inspired by swipe-and-slice mobile games, using lemon-themed creative. That is a compact match between input and product cue: the object the user acts on is also the flavor being advertised. Summer scenes and product imagery continued across the supporting ads. Malibu’s “Clock Off” Lens used a different structure. Snapchatters had to avoid work responsibilities such as emails and meetings to reach “Clock Off” status, with the branded relaxed moment at the end. The mechanic carried the campaign thought: escape overwork and enter leisure. See Publicis Santé for Malibu Rum.

These examples suggest a practical test for gamified AR: remove the logo and ask whether the action still expresses the campaign idea. Slicing lemons can still communicate lemon. Dodging emails can still communicate clocking off. A random obstacle course with a bottle or app icon pasted into the corner would produce interaction without the same understanding.

6. KICKS and Current Account Switch Service: sometimes the intended product is the Snap people send

KICKS used First Lens Unlimited on Norway’s National Day. The Lens placed the Norwegian flag and the message “Gratulerer med dagen” into a celebratory Snap. Snap reports 1.4 million total reach, one million organic reach, and more than 219,000 shares in 24 hours. The important design choice is restraint: the effect gave people a culturally relevant piece of communication they could make their own. See the KICKS success story.

The Current Account Switch Service took a participatory route with a karaoke-themed Lens that invited users to perform and share. Supporting Snap Ads and Commercials carried the broader service message, while the Lens made a dry category socially usable. Snap reports a Lens share rate 2.5 times its benchmark for the campaign period. See the Current Account Switch Service success story.

For these campaigns, a product-page click is not the only valid finish. Capture and peer-to-peer sharing can be the main behavior. The creative still needs an honest metric contract: a share shows that someone sent or posted content with the Lens; it does not prove they understood every claim, remembered the brand, or took a later financial action.

Build the post-open flow before the visual treatment

A practical creative brief should describe the entire state change, not stop at “the Lens puts X on the user’s face.” The following rules keep the sequence useful.

Give the first gesture one job

Do not ask the user to switch cameras, read a paragraph, choose a mode, and tap a product before the experience responds. Start with the smallest action that demonstrates the value: swipe to another frame, tap a shade, aim at the floor, move your head, or begin performing.

Make the response carry product information

The first action should not trigger confetti while leaving the product unchanged. Let the response reveal something useful: a new shape on the face, a different finish, a piece of furniture in context, an order growing, or a campaign metaphor advancing.

Preserve identity during comparison

If the user can switch products, keep the product name, visual state, and exit destination synchronized. Shopping Lens product cards exist to connect those states. A comparison experience becomes confusing when the AR object changes but the label or landing page does not.

Do not depend on a fixed catalog order

Snap’s current Shopping Lens documentation says catalog products are shown in random order. Build an opening that works no matter which eligible item appears first. “Try another style” is robust; “Start with the red frame on the left” may not be.

Design the endpoint as part of the interaction

The exit should continue the decision already made. A selected frame should open that frame. A selected shade should remain selected. A furniture item should lead to its dimensions and availability. A game should finish on the proposition it expressed. A shareable effect should create a frame someone would actually send.

Keep unknown behavior out of the storyboard review

A campaign video can show a successful path without revealing the inactive state, fallback, failed tracking, alternate product order, muted experience, or return from an external page. Review the actual Lens on representative devices, not only a polished screen recording.

Match measurement to the intended finish

Snap’s Community Lens Analytics documentation separates activation from downstream engagement. It defines total plays as Lens activations in the camera, while other metrics include views, shares, favorites, posts, unique posters, sessions per unique user, and play time. Event Insights also exposes counts such as taps, faces found or lost, objects tracked, and 3D objects tracked. See Lens Analytics.

For an ad campaign, confirm which signals are available in its reporting and which require additional tracking. The table below is a measurement plan, not a promise that every signal is built into every Lens report:

This is why “engagement” is too broad for a useful brief. Name the behavior that represents value, the denominator, the measurement source, and what the metric cannot tell you.

A filled post-open brief for a fictional eyewear Lens

The following is an original teaching example for a fictional brand, Northstar Eyewear. It is not a live Snapchat Lens or a performance claim.

The package also includes the Post-Open AR Flow Explorer, a self-contained interactive teaching demo for try-on, selection, and spatial discovery flows. It uses fictional products and CSS graphics; it does not access a camera, reproduce Snapchat UI, or simulate campaign performance.

Preflight the journey on the actual device

A post-open concept is only real when it survives device testing. Snap’s current performance guide says a Lens used as an ad must have Lens Activation Time below 650 milliseconds on its benchmark device, should remain below 8 MB, should target 30 FPS, and should stay above 15 FPS on most devices. Before launch, verify the complete path:

  1. Test the opening on front and rear cameras where the concept supports both.
  2. Perform the first gesture without coaching from the creator.
  3. Confirm the first response is visible, immediate, and product-relevant.
  4. Test every product state, label, price, availability condition, and exact outbound URL.
  5. Test tracking loss, camera switching, muted use, smaller screens, and lower-performance devices.
  6. Test catalog order without assuming a preferred SKU appears first.
  7. Use Push to Device to inspect placeholder product cards, then verify actual catalog products in the catalog-tagged Lens on a device. Lens Studio does not display product cards, and a placeholder preview does not establish live catalog behavior.
  8. Record both successful and failed paths for review, while keeping the actual Lens available for hands-on testing.

The visual surprise earns attention. The post-open sequence earns understanding. Build the Lens so the first action demonstrates the product, the next choice deepens the decision, and the exit preserves what the user just learned.
