A pause-ad layout can fail before anyone argues about typography. Put a product packshot, a 60-word offer, a QR code, a “Press OK” button, legal copy, and a brand line on the same television screen, and the viewer does not see five useful elements. They see five competing requests at the exact moment they chose to interrupt the show.
The better decision is to give the pause screen one job. Make the brand easy to remember, move a specific item to the viewer’s phone, or invite one supported remote action. Do not ask it to do all three.
That choice matters because a pause ad is not a miniature landing page and not a frozen 30-second commercial. The viewer initiated the state, the duration is uncertain, the screen may still carry program imagery or controls, and the ad can disappear the instant playback resumes. Design the message to land in a glance; treat any extra dwell time as a bonus.
What a CTV pause ad actually is
The IAB Tech Lab’s CTV Ad Portfolio defines a pause ad as an experience initiated when a viewer uses the remote to pause the content. Its finalized Digital Video & CTV Ad Format Guidelines describe both full-screen and partial-screen versions, static or animated creative, optional QR or remote interaction, and several possible exits: resuming the show, dismissing the message, leaving the app, or a device timeout.
Those guidelines are a baseline, not a universal trafficking sheet. The same document explicitly tells buyers and producers to check the publisher’s requirements. That warning is important: YouTube specifies a delayed static unit, Prime Video can add a remote-driven commerce action, Roku scopes its product to The Roku Channel, and older Hulu guidance used a transparent PNG composited into a pause experience. “Pause ad” names the moment, not one interchangeable file.
A useful creative brief therefore begins with four operational questions:
- When does the unit appear? Immediately, after a delay, or after another pause-state condition?
- What remains on screen? The full paused frame, a dimmed frame, a cropped player, or a publisher-controlled background?
- What can the viewer actually do? Resume, dismiss, scan, press a remote button, or only view?
- Who renders the action layer? The advertiser, the publisher, or a dynamic commerce system?
Until those answers are confirmed, a polished comp is still only a concept.
Six documented pause-ad examples and what they teach
The examples below were checked against official platform, publisher, or standards pages on September 9, 2026. “Documented” does not mean universally available in every country, device, buying path, or account. The Hulu row is deliberately labeled historical because its accessible delivery page is an old media-kit page, not current trafficking guidance.

The examples point to a simple pattern: the interaction model changes the creative hierarchy. A view-only unit needs a self-contained idea. A QR unit needs a valuable, phone-native next step. A remote-commerce unit needs space for the focus state and confidence that an accidental action can be understood or reversed. Treating all three as the same “CTV static” is where many layouts go wrong.
Design for attention that may be leaving the room
A long pause does not equal long attention. Someone may pause to answer the door, read a subtitle, inspect a scene, or walk away. The screen can remain visible for minutes while nobody is looking at it. Conversely, a person may notice the ad for one second before pressing play.
That makes the first-read order more important than the nominal time on screen:
- Brand or recognizable product
- One complete thought
- One optional action, only when supported
The order should still make sense if the third element is never used. A QR code cannot rescue an anonymous layout, and “Press OK” cannot replace a reason to care.
Television distance amplifies the problem. A design that feels spacious at 100% on a laptop can turn into small gray furniture across a living room. Innovid’s Interactive CTV Design Best Practices recommends clear, minimal compositions, large type, breathing room, safe-zone discipline, and explicit QR messaging. Amazon’s Prime Video pause-ad specification adds a useful platform-specific floor: at least 4.5:1 text contrast and a minimum 24-pixel text size. Those numbers are not permission to make every line 24 pixels; they are the bottom boundary for that product.
Original design 1: a partial-screen memory unit
The first teaching example is for Stillwater Tea, a fictional roasted-barley-tea brand. Its job is not to generate a click. It is to create one calm association while leaving much of the paused frame visible.
The unit contains the brand, product type, simple cup illustration, and the line “A quieter kind of evening.” There is no discount, QR code, URL, or button. That is not a missing conversion device; it is the creative strategy.
Why the design holds together:
- The brand and category can be read before the mood line.
- The square card has one visual focal point instead of a collage.
- The proposition is emotionally complete without requiring the viewer to stay paused.
- The lack of an action respects a low-attention or walk-away pause.
The production risk is placement. A 600 × 600 IAB baseline does not tell you which corner a particular publisher will use, whether subtitles remain visible, or how controls overlap. The team should request a publisher template or screenshot, then test the unit over bright, dark, busy, and face-heavy scenes. If the only supplied preview is a clean gradient, the design has not been stress-tested.
A weak revision would add “20% off,” a QR code, a product URL, and a second sentence because there appears to be empty space. The stronger revision keeps the emptiness: the space is what makes the message legible from a sofa.
Original design 2: a QR code with a specific phone job
The second example is for Northline Trail Notes, a fictional outdoor guide. The phone destination is not a generic homepage. It is a route pack with distance, parking, and a coffee stop for three easy Sunday hikes.
The headline “Three easy hikes for Sunday” gives the scan a bounded payoff. The CTA “Scan for the route pack” names the action and the object received. The QR is visually isolated, high contrast, and surrounded by a quiet zone. In the delivered asset, the demonstration code was decoded from the final 1920 × 1080 PNG during QA; it points to an example.com URL, not a functioning brand landing page.
That last distinction matters. A mockup can prove that a code survives export; it cannot prove living-room scan rates, destination speed, attribution, or publisher acceptance. Before trafficking a real version:
- Confirm whether the seller generates the QR dynamically or expects it baked into the asset. The IAB’s final guidelines describe both approaches.
- Scan the exact delivered file after resizing and compression, not just the source code exported separately.
- Open the destination on an ordinary phone connection and make the promised item visible immediately.
- Keep the URL and campaign parameters stable long enough for the flight, with a fallback if the destination changes.
The obvious bad version says “Learn more” under a small code. It gives the viewer work without telling them what they get. Another bad version adds a remote button next to the QR. Two input methods create a decision before the viewer has decided to engage at all.
Original design 3: one remote action, clearly conditional
The third example is for Lumen Home, a fictional home-safety brand. It is designed only for inventory that explicitly supports a remote-based send action.
The offer is “The 7-minute home check.” The focused action says “Send checklist.” There is no QR code. The button sits in a generous area that could be replaced or overlaid by a publisher-rendered focus component.
This design is useful because it separates the advertiser’s responsibility from the platform’s. The advertiser supplies the reason, brand, product context, and safe visual structure. The platform must supply the actual remote focus behavior, confirmation state, destination handling, measurement, and any required legal language. A static comp cannot validate those runtime details.
For a real remote-action build, ask to see every state: unfocused, focused, selected, success, failure, and return to the paused program. Also ask what happens when a child or distracted viewer presses OK, whether the request can be canceled, and how the account holder recognizes what was sent. The cleanest still image is only one frame of the experience.
A filled brief for choosing among the three approaches

This brief prevents a common sequence error. Teams often make the visual first and decide the action later. Reverse it: pick the job, confirm the supported behavior, write the promise, then compose the screen.
The pause-ad preflight
Before the creative leaves production, run these seven checks.
1. The thumbnail test
Reduce the whole screen to roughly one tenth of its working size. Can you still identify the brand, the main thought, and—only if present—the action? This is not a literal simulation of every television; it is a fast way to expose decorative copy and weak hierarchy.
2. The instant-resume test
Imagine the viewer presses play as soon as the unit appears. Does the first frame contain the complete idea? Avoid a headline that depends on a later animation or an image that only makes sense after a reveal. Even where animation is supported, the first rendered state must stand alone.
3. The scene-collision test
Composite the layout over several kinds of program frames: close-up faces, white interiors, dark night scenes, subtitles, sports graphics, and on-screen menus. Check the publisher’s control layer, not a designer’s invented substitute. Move or simplify the ad rather than hoping the show will provide clean negative space.
4. The action-integrity test
Show only actions the booked inventory supports. Do not draw “Press OK,” “Add to Cart,” “Send to Phone,” or a focus ring because another platform offers it. For QR executions, make the benefit specific and keep the phone journey consistent with the on-screen promise.
5. The distance and contrast test
Review the design on a television at normal seating distance, not only on a calibrated desktop monitor. Use large type, short lines, strong figure-ground contrast, and a dominant focal point. Apply the publisher’s safe zones and accessibility requirements exactly.
6. The exit-state test
Confirm how the unit leaves: resume, dismiss, timeout, app exit, screensaver, or refresh. A pause ad should not obscure how to return to the show. If video, animation, or refresh is possible, confirm whether it autoplays and whether sound is prohibited, optional, or required. The IAB baseline says the default pause execution does not require audio; the seller still controls the actual behavior.
7. The delivered-file test
Open the exported PNG or video, inspect its true dimensions and file size, and test the version that will be trafficked. Decode the final QR. Check spelling, legal copy, product accuracy, and any platform-generated overlays. A successful scan from the design file does not validate a compressed derivative.
What the media and measurement plan should say
A pause impression is not proof that the viewer watched for the full paused duration. Match measurement to the job:
- For a memory unit, use reach and an appropriate brand or search-lift design where the platform and budget support it.
- For a QR unit, separate valid scans, qualified visits, completion of the promised phone task, and downstream conversion. Do not report the QR’s presence as engagement.
- For a remote action, record focused states, selected actions, confirmed sends or carts, failures, cancellations, and later outcomes where permitted.
- For every version, monitor frequency and any experience signals the publisher makes available. A technically successful action can still be a poor user experience.
Platform reporting is uneven. Google’s YouTube pause-ad help page, for example, lists impression and lift-oriented reporting while noting that third-party viewability measurement is not supported for the product. Google’s separate Display & Video 360 pause-ad inventory page says publisher specifications and scale vary and, at the time of its update, only standard reporting was available for that deal workflow. Build the test around metrics the booked supply can actually return.
The practical rule: one pause, one promise
The strongest pause-ad examples do not win by using every available feature. They match one useful promise to one verified behavior.
A view-only pause unit should be memorable without demanding anything. A QR unit should make the phone task specific enough to justify the scan. A remote-action unit should reserve the hierarchy for the platform interaction and show only states the publisher can really deliver. In every case, the creative has to work before the viewer walks away or resumes the show.
Design for the interruption the viewer chose—not for an imaginary captive audience.
