Your 300×250 static ad is finished. The media plan now asks for a 728×90 leaderboard and a 160×600 skyscraper. The fastest-looking option is to scale the rectangle twice, crop whatever falls outside the frame, and reduce the type until nothing collides.
That produces three files, but not necessarily three usable ads.
A strong multi-size set preserves a message contract: what the product is, what the offer means, which conditions change eligibility or cost, and what action the viewer can take. The layout can change substantially. A product image may disappear from the wide unit, two product states may become a vertical sequence, and a call to action may move from the right edge to the bottom. What should not change accidentally is the promise.
This article uses three deliberately contrasting Google uploaded-image dimensions—728×90, 300×250, and 160×600—to show that process. They are teaching canvases, not universal requirements or claims about the best-performing inventory. Four original fictional campaigns are recomposed into all three dimensions, giving you 12 production-size PNG examples with the offer conditions intact.
Start With the Delivery Spec, Not the Screenshot
For Google uploaded display ads, the current specifications list GIF, JPG, and PNG files with a maximum file size of 150 KB. The official size table includes all three dimensions used here: 728×90, 300×250, and 160×600. Google’s current Demand Gen transition documentation also lists Uploaded Display Ad (Static Image Ad) as supported; the campaign shell may be changing, but that does not turn a fixed raster banner into a responsive-display preview. Recheck both pages before production because platform routes and limits can change.

The file itself matters more than a screenshot or a label in a download library. On CooperVision’s Biofinity toric multifocal materials page, one web-banner link is labeled 300×250, yet its linked JPG filename contains 350x250. The source page and linked rectangle file show a labeling mismatch. The downloaded JPEG decodes to 350×250 pixels, confirming that this linked file is not a 300×250 export. The cause of the incorrect page label remains unknown.
That is a useful production warning: record the requested size, then inspect the decoded file dimensions, format, and byte count. Do not “correct” a questionable asset by squeezing it into another canvas and calling the discrepancy solved.
Google’s image ad requirements and editorial policies reject unclear or blurry images and illegible text, but the reviewed pages do not publish one minimum font size that makes every static ad readable. A pixel number without the font, weight, contrast, export, and display context is not a reliable rule.
What Real Multi-Size Ads Keep—and What They Change
Public creative libraries can show how a set was composed, but they do not show which version performed better. Treat them as observable layout evidence, not a results study.
The clearest public three-size set in this research comes from Icarus Art. Its downloads page links separate 728×90, 300×250, and 160×600 JPGs for the same drawing-board product.
Across the three files, the product identity, central headline, product name, and action remain recognizable. Their composition does not:
- The wide ad spreads the headline and action horizontally and moves the board illustration to the right.
- The rectangle stacks headline, action, and product illustration.
- The tall ad turns the page into a sequence and inserts an additional paragraph containing innovation, intuitiveness, and safety claims that is absent from the other two.
That last change is especially important. “Same campaign” does not automatically mean “same claim set.” When you audit variants, look for content added to the roomier shape as well as content removed from the constrained one. An extra superiority or safety claim is not harmless decoration, and its truth was not evaluated here.
A second CooperVision set provides a counterexample to rigid formulas. The company’s MyDay multifocal campaign page links three patient banners. In the visible files, the 160×600 includes a product box and portrait; the 300×250 uses a visible contact lens and a different portrait crop; and the 728×90 compresses the portrait to the eye area. The product name stays in the copy, and none of the three visible files uses a separate button-shaped CTA. The file labeled 160×600 actually decodes to 158×594 pixels; its composition is useful to inspect, but its label is not a verified export dimension.
So there is no universal rule that the packshot or button must occupy the same position—or even appear—in every size. The useful question is: which element carries product identity and action in this particular composition?
These commercial files are linked for inspection rather than reproduced in the original examples below. Public visibility does not by itself grant permission to copy or edit a brand’s assets.
Why a Proportional Resize Is Not a New Variant
Consider a 300×250 master that must become 728×90.
To fit the entire rectangle inside the leaderboard, the limiting scale factor is 90 ÷ 250 = 0.36. The result is only 108×90, leaving 620 horizontal pixels unused. Nominal 18-pixel type becomes 6.48 pixels after scaling.
To fill the leaderboard’s width instead, the scale factor is 728 ÷ 300 ≈ 2.427. The scaled image becomes about 728×606.7. A centered crop must remove roughly 516.7 pixels of that height, retaining only 14.8% of the scaled vertical content.

The calculation does not prove that a specific person can or cannot read the result. It shows what the operation does. A proportional resize can be perfectly reasonable when the destination has the same aspect ratio and the final export still passes its checks. It is inadequate when radically different proportions force you to choose between microscopic type, empty space, or uncontrolled crop loss.
Write the Message Contract Before You Open the Layout
Before designing the variants, classify every element by its job.

This is not a rule that every term belongs inside every banner. Context matters. The FTC’s 2013 staff guidance on digital disclosures says that space-constrained ads are not exempt from disclosure obligations. It also recognizes that some disclosures can be reached by click-through, depending on factors such as importance, proximity, prominence, and whether the ad is understandable without them. The hard boundary is practical: when a necessary disclosure cannot fit, the guidance says to modify the claim or not use that ad format. See the FTC’s “.com Disclosures” guidance, especially printed pages 15–17.
“Free” claims deserve particular care. The FTC’s Guide Concerning Use of the Word “Free” says conditions for receiving and retaining the free item should be disclosed clearly and conspicuously at the outset. Google likewise treats hidden payment models, misleading prices, and unavailable offers as misrepresentation issues.
For a live offer, legal and policy review must follow the actual product, landing page, jurisdiction, and purchase flow. The examples below are teaching designs, not compliance approvals.
Four Fictional Campaigns, Twelve Production-Size Ads
The following campaigns and illustrations are original and fictional. Each set was exported as separate 728×90, 300×250, and 160×600 PNGs. The comparison boards paste those files at their native raster dimensions, although a publishing system may scale the board on screen.
Example 1: Let Product Shape Carry the Promise
Invariant message: a desk lamp folds flat. Action: “See the lamp.” There is no price or conditional offer, so this is the simplest set.

The invariant is not “use both product pictures everywhere.” It is “make the folding benefit understandable.” In the wide unit, one strong product state plus the words does that job with less congestion. In the taller units, the second state earns space because it clarifies the mechanism.
Example 2: Preserve the Conditions of “Free Shipping”
Invariant message: “Free standard shipping on orders $60+.” Conditions: “Contiguous U.S.” and “After discounts, before tax.” Action: “Shop home goods.”

The wide version removes product art entirely. The rectangle adds only a small parcel cue. The tall unit restores a larger home-goods illustration after the complete promise and conditions. This is meaningful recomposition: art consumes whatever room remains after the offer is made accurate.
Why not replace the two conditions with “Terms apply”? Because the shortened statement no longer tells the viewer who qualifies or how the threshold is calculated. The difference appears in ordinary baskets:

A shorter phrase would create a broader offer, not merely a cleaner layout.
Example 3: Keep the Price Unit and Payment Cadence Together
Invariant message: “3 seats. 12 months. $120.” Conditions: “One payment. No auto-renewal. USD + applicable tax.” Action: “See the plan.”

The wide banner gives almost all of its height to the package and billing terms. The rectangle stacks them. The skyscraper uses the long middle area for a simple project-board illustration, but the CTA remains after the terms rather than interrupting them.
The tempting shortcut is $10/month, because $120 ÷ 12 = $10. That number is only a monthly equivalent. It is not a monthly billing option in this brief. The package also contains 36 seat-months, so $120 ÷ (3 × 12) ≈ $3.33 per seat-month. That is another valid analytical unit—and another potentially misleading headline if the viewer must pay $120 once.
A useful price hierarchy keeps quantity, term, total amount, and payment cadence close enough to be understood as one package.
Example 4: Let Logistics Beat Decoration
Invariant message: “Beginner collage workshop.” When: “Oct 22, 2026 · 6–7 p.m. ET.” Conditions: “Free · Live online · Registration required.” Action: “Register free.”

The 728×90 and 300×250 versions contain no collage illustration. That is intentional, not unfinished. The date, time zone, online delivery, free price, and registration requirement all change whether the event is relevant and what the viewer must do. The tall version has enough remaining space to reintroduce art without pushing those facts into a tiny footer.
This set also shows why “keep the same layout” is the wrong invariant. The wide unit reads left to right in three bands; the tall unit reads top to bottom as promise, schedule, conditions, illustration, and action. The sequence changes while the event meaning stays stable.
Check the Export at Its Actual Display Size
A layout-file screenshot cannot validate the delivered ad. The 12 teaching ads are RGB PNGs at their stated dimensions; the largest is 14,786 bytes. Open the individual files in the native-size preview to compare each message at its intended proportions.
The examples preserve their essential copy across all three shapes. File checks and visual inspection support that observation; they do not establish participant readability or advertising performance.
For contrast, the examples use the W3C’s 4.5:1 minimum for normal text as a voluntary QA benchmark. It is not a Google minimum-font rule, and nominal contrast can still be undermined by thin strokes, antialiasing, texture, or an unexpected background.
“Actual size” also needs a display record. MDN defines devicePixelRatio as the ratio of physical pixels to CSS pixels and notes that page zoom affects it. A 300-pixel-wide file, a 300-CSS-pixel slot, and 300 physical screen pixels are therefore not interchangeable descriptions.
Use this release sequence for every final variant:
- Open the exported binary, not an editor screenshot. Verify decoded width and height, format, and byte count.
- Inspect the ad at 100% page zoom and record its CSS display dimensions and device-pixel ratio.
- Read back the product or event, promise, price or threshold, material conditions, and action without opening the landing page.
- Compare the final crop with the message contract. Make sure a face, product state, logo, or proof element has not changed meaning.
- Recheck text against its real background after compression. Do not rely on a design-token contrast value if the exported pixels differ.
- Compare all sizes side by side. Look for a condition that vanished, a price unit that changed, or a new claim that appeared only in one version.
When the Right Decision Is to Drop the Size
“No tiny text” is a release goal, not permission to erase the terms that make an offer true.
Remove decoration first. Remove a redundant product state next. Rewrite the claim only when the shorter wording remains accurate. In the fictional shipping set, a “Terms apply” version is rejected because it hides threshold mechanics and geography. In the plan set, $10/month is rejected because it changes a one-payment annual package into the appearance of monthly billing. In the workshop set, removing the artwork is accepted because the event remains fully understandable.
When essential information still cannot be presented clearly, change the claim or leave that size out. A smaller upload list is better than a larger set of ads that no longer advertise the same thing.
