An Unexpected Video in Performance Max? Find Its Source and the Right Control

A documentation-based diagnostic guide to separating Performance Max fallback videos, video enhancements, advertiser uploads on unfamiliar channels, and moving image assets before choosing a control.

A video appears in a Performance Max asset group, but nobody on the team remembers uploading it. It might be a slideshow assembled from product images, a vertical crop of a horizontal commercial, a shorter edit, a voice-over version, or a normal-looking file on a YouTube channel your team cannot access. Those clues describe what the asset looks like. They do not establish where it came from.

The practical answer is to classify the asset by report evidence before changing a setting. Google currently documents two related provenance fields: its auto-generated-video page says Performance Max auto-generated videos are labeled “Automatically created” under Source in Asset Group details, while its asset-group-reporting page says the Added by column indicates whether an asset was uploaded by an advertiser or created or enhanced with Google AI. Google’s published documentation separates four useful branches. The diagrams below explain these controls; they are original maps rather than captures of a live account:

  • Fallback auto-generated video: Google documents the Performance Max control as uploading your own video at the asset-group level.
  • Video enhancement: Google starts with a video you supplied and creates another format, length, or eligible voice-over; the bundled control is at campaign level.
  • Advertiser-attributed video on an unfamiliar channel: investigate who or what added it, including the documented House channel workflow, before treating it as automation.
  • Moving asset typed as Image: use the Image Enhancement branch, not the video branch.

Start with the report evidence Google documents

Google’s asset-group-reporting instructions begin in Asset groups within the Campaigns menu. They tell the advertiser to select the Performance Max campaign, switch the page from Summary to Table, and use filters such as asset type, policy approval status, and performance. The same page says Added by distinguishes advertiser uploads from assets created or enhanced with Google AI. (Asset group reporting)

Google’s separate auto-generated-video page uses a more specific description: Performance Max auto-generated videos can be previewed in Asset Group details and are labeled Automatically created under Source. (Auto-generated video ads)

Because Google’s own documentation describes both Added by and Source, a useful audit records the column name and value actually available rather than insisting that every account must expose one identical label. Capture five facts:

  1. campaign and asset-group name;
  2. asset type, especially whether it is Video or Image;
  3. the provenance column name and displayed value;
  4. whether an active advertiser-supplied video is associated with that asset group;
  5. whether the unfamiliar asset has a recognizable parent video, such as the horizontal master from which a vertical cut could have been derived.

A thumbnail is supporting context, not provenance. A slideshow look suggests a fallback, but it does not prove one. A polished vertical edit suggests an enhancement, but it could also be an advertiser upload. A Google-managed channel is also inconclusive because Google documents both storage for auto-generated videos and a House channel workflow for direct advertiser uploads.

Four systems that can create an “unuploaded” feeling

Google’s automation-availability page lists auto-generated video, video enhancements, image enhancements, text customization, Final URL expansion, and account-level automated assets as distinct features. Branch 1: Source says “Automatically created”

This is the fallback branch most advertisers mean when they search for Performance Max automatically created videos. Google says auto-generated video ads are created when there are no active, user-uploaded videos in Performance Max asset groups. The system can use the campaign’s text and image assets, brand-guideline colors and fonts, and Merchant Center product images when a feed is attached. The operative control is unusually important because it is easy to look for the wrong switch. In Google’s current availability table, the Performance Max row identifies the level as Asset group and says the system automatically disables auto-generated video ads when the advertiser uploads their own videos. The Demand Gen row, by contrast, explicitly lists an enable-or-disable setting. The documented Performance Max control is therefore advertiser video coverage at the asset-group level, not a separate PMax fallback-video toggle. (Auto-generated video ads)

Add a real video to every affected asset group

If a campaign has four asset groups, check all four. Adding an advertiser video to one group does not establish video coverage in the others because Google documents the control at the asset-group level.

Use a real, policy-eligible creative: an existing YouTube video, a file uploaded through an available Google Ads workflow, or a video intentionally created in the Asset library and then selected for the asset group. A deliberately blank or disapproved file is not a documented control and does not fit Google’s active, user-uploaded video condition.

Google’s video-asset guidance recommends HD, supports horizontal 16:9, square 1:1, and vertical 9:16 formats, and gives 10 seconds or more as the guideline for each orientation. It also recommends at least one vertical video between 10 and 60 seconds for Shorts eligibility. Supplying a video addresses the fallback condition; supplying native assets in multiple orientations addresses presentation quality and placement coverage. Those are related but separate decisions. Separate prevention from cleanup

Google’s documentation states the condition that triggers auto-generation and the control that disables it. It does not state an exact live-account transition time for an already-created asset or promise that the asset will immediately disappear from every report after a new video is added.

That leads to a useful operational distinction:

  • Prevention: associate an advertiser video with the affected asset group so the documented missing-video condition no longer applies.
  • Cleanup: if the relevant reporting surface offers an asset-removal action, remove the unwanted item and record that action separately.
  • Verification: return to reporting and record the observed status instead of writing “deleted immediately” or another effect the documentation does not guarantee.

Why the video may live on a channel you cannot manage

Google says that when it first creates auto-generated videos, it also creates a Google-owned channel to house them. That channel is separate from an advertiser-owned YouTube channel linked to the account, and the advertiser cannot manage the channel or edit the auto-generated videos there. A missing video in your brand’s YouTube Studio is therefore not enough to diagnose an account breach; the Source or Added by evidence remains the better starting point. (Auto-generated video ads)

Branch 2: Google created a derivative from your video

Suppose your team uploaded a 16:9 launch film, but reporting now contains a vertical crop, a square version, a shorter edit, or a new voice-over. Google describes these as video enhancements created from existing videos. It also says video enhancements do not apply to auto-generated videos, which makes the parent relationship decisive: an enhancement starts with a video; the fallback starts with non-video assets. Use the campaign-level enhancement control

Google’s current Performance Max instructions say to go to:

Campaign settings → Asset optimization → Video → Enhancement

Unchecking Enhancement opts the campaign out of video enhancements. This control applies to derivatives of supplied videos; it is not documented as the control for a video-empty asset group’s fallback generation. (Performance Max video automation)

Google also documents asset-level visibility for automatically enhanced videos across asset-group, campaign-level, and channel-level reporting. When only one derivative is unacceptable, its removal instructions say to find the asset under Assets, use the Edit dropdown beside the asset name, and select Remove. Removing one derivative and disabling Enhancement answer different questions. The first is asset cleanup. The second changes whether the campaign may use that enhancement class. Neither action substitutes for adding advertiser video coverage to a different asset group that has no active video.

Branch 3: Reporting attributes the video to the advertiser, but the channel is unfamiliar

An unfamiliar YouTube channel does not prove that Google assembled the creative from images and text. Google also documents a House channel, a Google-managed YouTube channel that lets an advertiser upload a video file directly during Performance Max campaign setup without creating or linking a brand-owned YouTube channel. Google says House channel users cannot access YouTube Analytics for the video, use it to create remarketing lists, edit its title or description, add a custom thumbnail, or appeal video takedowns. Those limitations explain why a legitimate advertiser-supplied asset can be difficult for a later reviewer to trace from YouTube alone. (Video assets for Performance Max)

Do not infer “House channel” from the thumbnail or channel name. Google’s documentation explains the workflow, but it does not say that House channel assets receive a unique provenance value that you can identify from appearance alone. Treat House channel as one hypothesis when reporting attributes the asset to the advertiser.

Use Change history as attribution evidence

Google says Change history covers the previous two years and can be filtered by date range, change type, campaign, or ad group. For changes made through the Google Ads interface, the User column can show the person’s email. Automated or internal changes may appear under names such as Google Ads system, while API changes may show Google Ads API or a specific tool name. (About change history)

Use that evidence to test several explanations:

  • an employee or agency uploaded the file;
  • a third-party tool added or changed the asset through the API;
  • the file was uploaded directly during campaign setup and stored through the House channel workflow;
  • the asset predates the two-year Change history window.

Change history is useful but not absolute. Google notes that some account-level setting changes and some changes made by Google representatives may not be listed. An empty search therefore means “not found in the available history,” not “proved impossible.” (About change history)

Once the asset is established as advertiser-controlled, decide whether to keep, replace, or remove it through normal asset management. Turning off Video Enhancement may stop derivatives, but it does not explain or remove the advertiser’s original upload.

Branch 4: The moving asset is actually an Image

Motion does not automatically make the reported asset a video. Google’s automation-availability page says Image Enhancements can include crop, uncrop, animation, blur, and filter options. Its dedicated image-enhancement page also describes smart cropping, text and logo overlays, resolution improvement, and image expansion. For that branch, Google documents the campaign setting under Asset optimization, where the advertiser can check or uncheck Image Enhancement. If the report’s asset type is Image, use that control rather than assuming that a moving creative came from the fallback-video system. (Automatically enhanced images)

Three settings that sound relevant but solve another problem

Text Customization

Text Customization was formerly called Automatically created assets, which makes it a common false lead. Google’s control page explicitly says it covers customized text assets excluding video assets. The same page states that if you do not upload video creatives, Performance Max will automatically create video assets using the text and images in your asset groups. Disabling Text Customization is therefore not the documented way to fill the missing-video condition. (Controlling text customization)

Final URL expansion

Google describes Final URL expansion as replacing the Final URL with a landing page it considers more relevant to the user’s search query. That can change the destination paired with an ad, but it is not a video-origin control. Treat an unexpected destination and an unexpected creative as separate investigations. Account-level automated assets

Google documents account-level automated assets as a separate system shared with Search campaigns. Its examples include dynamic sitelinks, dynamic structured snippets, business information, location assets, promotions, and callouts. Those controls do not replace the asset-group-level video coverage documented for the Performance Max fallback branch. (Performance Max automation feature availability)

A filled audit: one campaign, four different answers

The following fictional example uses Northline Coffee, a retailer with one Performance Max campaign and four product-themed asset groups. The facts are illustrative; the control logic comes from the documentation cited above.

Build replacement coverage that matches the asset group

When you replace a fallback, do not drop the same generic corporate reel into every asset group merely to satisfy the condition. Document the intended product, offer, audience, landing page, approved claims, and permitted audio for each group. Keep approved horizontal, square, and vertical files together, and assign an owner for derivatives if Video Enhancement remains enabled.

This is especially important for Merchant Center campaigns. Google warns that an auto-generated Performance Max video may feature a different product from the product on the landing page. Its guidance is to limit products in the asset group with product filters so the product shown and the relevant landing page stay aligned. (Video assets for Performance Max)

Close the ticket with evidence, not a remembered setting name

A durable record contains the campaign, asset group, asset type, provenance column and value, parent-video status, action taken, owner, and date. When you recheck reporting, record what was actually observed. Do not turn the documentation’s eligibility rule into an unsupported promise about exact timing or immediate deletion.

The final decision rule is compact:

  • Source says Automatically created and the asset group has no active advertiser video: add your own video to that asset group.
  • The unfamiliar asset is a derivative of a supplied video: use Video → Enhancement, and remove individual derivatives when needed.
  • Reporting attributes the video to the advertiser but the channel or file is unfamiliar: investigate users, tools, Change history, and the House channel workflow.
  • The asset is typed as Image: use Image Enhancement.

The fastest route to the right control is not a search for every setting containing the word “automatic.” It is a documented provenance check.
